Taiwanese heavy metal band CHTHONIC, which has not released any new work in 5 years, announced that it will perform at the largest rock festival in Taiwan\u2013the Megaport Festival. Fans went mad over the announcement, and Megaport tickets were sold out in seconds. Moreover, CHTHONIC caught many by surprise by releasing the MV of its new single \u201cPATTONKAN\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Also sitting in Taiwan\u2019s Parliament, CHTHONIC\u2019s lead vocalist Freddy said that, though he\u2019s invested most of his time in parliamentary works, inspirations for music still popped up from time to time when he felt depressed. But he didn\u2019t have time to sit down quietly and write them down. \u201cI feel anxious sometimes, there are so many things I want to do, but I feel I don\u2019t have sufficient time in my life to do everything,” he said. \u201cHow would those who came before us think of us in Heaven if we don\u2019t move forward?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n With such emotions in mind, Freddy once met Mr. Kao Ying-chieh\uff08\u9ad8\u82f1\u5091\uff09, son of an indigenous victim of Taiwan\u2019s White Terror authoritarian period Kao Yi-sheng\uff08\u9ad8\u4e00\u751f\uff09, and his family. Freddy listened to him telling the story of how his father advocated for democracy and was eventually executed, and read the over 60 letters that Kao Yi-sheng sent to his family before he was executed. \u201cThe very strong emotional bonds between Kao Yi-sheng and his wife, as well as with his children were an inspiration to me,\u201d Freddy said. \u201cAs long as we don\u2019t give up, defend the people and land we love, and move as hard as we can, we\u2019re on the right track.” Jesse, who co-composed the music, said that they first wrote a lot of complicated stuff, but later simplified it as the emotions flew. \u201cWe found that the simplified version actually really hit the spot!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n So the new song was born. The title \u201cPATTONKAN\u201d is the indigenous Tsou name for \u201cYushan\uff08\u7389\u5c71\uff09\u201d or \u201cJade Mountain\u201d. Jade Mountain is the highest peak in northeast Asia, and considered as a sacred mountain to the Taiwanese. The name \u201cPATTONKAN\u201d is meant to be a reminder of the inspiration for the song. The line \u98a8\u8d77\u7530\u5730 \u904e\u6eaa\u5c71\u91ce \u543e\u9b42\u56db\u6642\u770b\u9867\u5b88\u8b77 actully echoes a line in Kao Yi-sheng\u2019s final letter \u201c\u7530\u5730\u548c\u5c71\u91ce\u90fd\u6709\u6211\u7684\u9b42\u5b88\u8457”, meaning that his soul will safeguard the fileds and mountains of Taiwan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n CHTHONIC again worked with film director Hung Po-te for the MV for the song. The actors in the MV are the same as the ones who acted in Kaoru, Defenders of Bu-Tik Palace, and Millennia\u2019s Faith Undone. Hung Shih-hsun acted as the male lead Tsing-guan, and Wang Ting-chu acted as his wife Kaoru. The actress who acted as the daughter in the MV of \u201cMillennia\u2019s Faith Undone (the Aeon\u2019s Wraith Version)\u201d appeared as an adult. Lee Hsueh, who played a role in the movie <\/span>Untold Herstory<\/span><\/i> also appeared in the MV.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The painting that appeared in the MV is <\/span>Looking at Jade Mountain from Alishan<\/span><\/i> by Chen Cheng-po\uff08\u9673\u6f84\u6ce2\uff09. Chen Cheng-po and Kao Yi-sheng were both key players during the 228 Massacre. Chen was executed openly in the street, while Kao was arrested and executed years later. The production team decided to make it more powerful artistically through the connection of the painting and music.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The director, Hung Po-te, pointed out that previous MVs in the same series gradually turned from the husband Tsing-guan\u2019s perspective to his wife Kaoru\u2019s. This time, he wishes to show the kid Kiku\u2019s perspective. The child\u2019s story was inspired by that of Kao Yi-sheng\u2019s daughter Nana. After Kao was executed, his family was still under long-time surveillance and repression by the authoritarian regime. Nana, who dreamed of becoming a singer, became a controlled \u201ctoy\u201d for high-ranking officials.
